Mattress Factory
The Mattress Factory based in Pittsburgh, PA is a museum of contemporary art that exhibits room-sized works called installations. Created on site by artists from across the country and around the
world, their unique exhibitions feature a variety of media that engage all of the senses. Each year artists come to Pittsburgh, live at the museum, and create new work.
Desiring to connect artists closer to the visitors, the museum came to Carnegie Mellon for a design solution that would be both immersive and engaging.
As part of a team of 5, we started with design research with the key stakeholders and analysis of the cultural environment at the Mattress Factory. From there we ideated concepts to create long-lasting relationships between the vistors and artists. We finally developed a simple solution that utilized a website and on-site artifacts. As visitors move through the museum, they gather marks on a scorecard that they can bring back to a website with user-generated content ranging from user comments to other produced media.
